N44m bribe: EFCC, ICPC to investigate DG SEC, committee chair

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission on Friday accepted the open invitation of the House Committee on Capital Market and other Institutions to probe the N44m bribe allegation made against it by the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Ms. Arunma Oteh.

On Thursday during a House of Representatives hearing on the Nigerian Capital Market, Oteh had told a stunned audience that the committee demanded gratification in the days preceding the hearing.
Oteh had said that the committee demanded N39m from SEC to fund the hearing and that the chairman of the committee, Mr. Herman Hembe, had asked for N5m from her 24 hours before the hearing.
“In asking the SEC to contribute N39m for this public hearing, don’t you think that you are undermining your capacity to carry out your duties?” she asked.

Oteh, who said that she turned down both requests, further alleged that SEC sponsored Hembe on a purported trip to the Dominican Republic to attend a conference on capital market operations in 2011.
Immediately the SEC boss finished speaking, Hembe who described allegations as being ‘aimed at derailing the objective of the hearing,’ called on the EFCC and ICPC to launch an investigation into them.
Both agencies told SUNDAY PUNCH that they were ready to investigate the bribery allegation to get to the root of the matter.
A very reliable source at the EFCC told our correspondent that the agency received open invitations.
The source, who pleaded anonymity because she was not authorised to speak on the matter, said, “Both the accused (Hembe) and the accuser (Arunma) have to tell us everything they know about the allegation with proofs to substantiate their claims.
“If the DG says Hembe demanded bribe from her, she has to show proof. She also has to prove that the committee demanded the sum of N39m; these are very grave allegations. Also the committee and its chairman have to respond to whatever documents or statements Ms. Arunmah makes.
“This calls for a substantial enquiry and they will be hearing from us soon.”
The source however declined to comment on how soon both parties will receive their letters of invitation.
“It is something we must do. It was broadcast live on television and everyone heard the chairman invite us. It is a call to duty,” she added.
When contacted, EFCC’s Acting Head, Media & Publicity, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said, “We are following the development at the public hearing and we are going to look into the issues raised in respect of those allegations of bribery.”
Also speaking on its role in the investigations, ICPC’s Resident Media Consultant, Mr. Folu Olamiti, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the anti-graft agency would also be demanding a copy of the committee report.
Olamiti said the report would help the agency’s investigations.
“We are going to ask for the full report. Also, we are going to demand a written invitation from the chairman. What he said was a verbal invitation that was broadcast but we are going to ask for more and take it up from there.”
Meanwhile, sources close to the SEC DG told our correspondent on Friday night that moves were being made by some stakeholders to end the rift between Arunma and the committee.
“We need to protect the capital market at this crucial time. We are receiving calls from all over the world and that is not good for the integrity of the house. We are not going to engage in a verbal war because stakeholders are already holding talks on how to have a peaceful resolution. But let’s wait and see what Tuesday will hold.”
A cross-section of lawmakers however told our correspondent in Abuja that the ICPC and EFCC would have to step into the matter because the allegations were too grave.

Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH showed that Oteh’s allegations threw the House off balance, forcing the leadership to convene a series of meetings from Thursday night.
One account claimed that Hembe was invited to one of the meetings to hear his account of what exactly transpired at the committee’s sittings.

But, when contacted, the House Deputy Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, denied that the leadership met over the altercations between Oteh and Hembe.
When asked what would become of the probe, Ogor said that it would continue on Tuesday but added that he was not sure of the direction it would take.

According to him, the investigation was a product of a resolution of the House, which could only be halted by another resolution of the House in plenary.
He added, “The probe will certainly go on; whatever happened on Thursday did not change the original course of the investigation.
“The House is looking for how to resolve the challenges in the capital market; so, any personal issues between two people at the hearing did not alter the intention of the probe.”

When asked whether there was a possibility of the House advising Hembe to step aside, Ogor responded, “I can’t say so; I think it is the speaker’s decision to make. By Tuesday, the picture will become clearer.”
Findings indicated that an option of halting the probe was allegedly canvassed at one of the meetings, but it was discarded because members argued that such a step would be giving credence to Oteh’s allegations.
Another influential member of the House informed SUNDAY PUNCH that by the rules of the House, no actions could be taken on the matter before Tuesday.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, said that the House would not give any position on the matter before Tuesday.
Mohammed confirmed that the leadership was looking into the Oteh-Hembe clash and would find an “amicable solution to it by Tuesday.”

“We won’t stop the probe; on Tuesday, this issue will be thrashed out in the plenary; what I cannot say is whether the same people presiding over the probe will continue”, he added.
In line with the tradition of the House in tackling such matters, its Committee on Ethics and Privileges might be mandated to investigate Oteh’s bribery allegations as a separate matter, while the probe would continue.

BBA winner, Karen Igho, shrugs off misrepresentation

                                                           Karen Igho                                                    Vimbai Mutinhiri
To understand this press release from Karen's camp, you have to understand what initially happened. There were speculations last week that Ms Igho refused to do a magazine cover shoot with her former Zimbabwean BBA housemate, Vimbai. Read the statement below to get the gist...

A press release allegedly by a representative of Vimbai Mutinhiri (former BBA housemate from Zimbabwe) on the viral social media story – which suggests that the effervescence Ms Karen Igho, deliberately refused to be part of a photo shoot session with her for ‘Miss Dee’ magazine.
While this release frowns on any form of ‘She said, he said’ controversy, Ms Karen’s love for her ever supportive fans and media friends made her request that her position be made public.

Ms Igho was approached in Abuja on the 4th September, 2011 by the publisher of Miss Dee magazine at a casual meet to participate in a photo shoot for the magazine, but no exact time was proposed because at the time Ms Karen was preoccupied with spending quality time with her family in Jos; more so as she had just returned from the BigBrother Africa house and needed a relief from the Amplified euphoria.

However, Ms Karen recently got a call with respect to the photo shoot, but for her engagement with her friend, Mr Denrele Edun on the ‘Heavy Beauty’ movie production set she could have gladly obliged. Hence, it is not practical that Ms Igho who was on a movie set in Lagos refused or walked away from being part of a photo shoot session with Vimbai in Abuja.

Ms Karen has being in frequent communication with housemates, even proven with the time spent with Millicent (Kenya) when she came to Nigeria in spite of the ‘House’ confrontations between both during the BBA game episode.

To further reinforce Ms Karen Igho’s friendly disposition to her fellow housemates from BBA Amplified; Ms Karen had begun sending out official invites to WENDALL PARSON (Zimbabwe), LUCLAY ‘MR OTONO’ (S/Africa), WEZA SOLANGE (Angola), LOMWE (Malawi), MUMBA MWAKWA (Zambia), BERNADINA BUYS (Nambia) and their country counterparts in the BBA house in anticipation of a reunion party in Nigeria towards her April 6th birth date celebration. The weekend activity will feature the launch of Ms Karen’s T-shirt line, a BBA housemates’ media tour, charity visits to orphanage homes and the media launch of her upcoming reality TV shoot (details will be made explicit in a release towards the event).

It is Ms Karen’s view that if  Vimbai has something to say to her friend, Mr Denrele Edun it’s best done through inter-personal communication and she frowns at any insinuation of ‘war’ with anyone, as in the words of the Destiny Child’s song ‘Survivor’ Miss Karen is better than that.

Finally, we like to empathize with ‘Miss Dee’ magazine and request that the media please redirect their channel of inquiry.
    Thank you.Source URL: http://davidlabounty.blogspot.com/2012/03/

Arik Air to stop Abuja - London flights

Lagos - London flights remain in place but the Abuja - London route to stop
    From Reuters

Nigeria's biggest carrier Arik Air said it would have to stop its daily flights between Abuja and London because it was being prevented from getting arrival and departure slots at UK airports, an accusation that risked reigniting a diplomatic row.
Arik Air - the only Nigerian airline flying to Britain - said slots it had leased from Lufthansa's British unit bmi at London's Heathrow airport were about to expire and it was now facing unspecified "restrictions".

"Whilst it is regrettable to have to suspend our services between Abuja and London, we simply could not continue with the route due to the restrictions placed upon us in accessing arrival/departure slots into UK airports," Arik's chief executive Michael Arumemi-Ikhide, said in a statement on Friday.
He did not spell out who was imposing the restrictions on the company.

But a similar row over landing slots and ticket pricing between Nigerian and British authorities in November almost grounded all flights between the two countries.

"It is an unfortunate situation and one that we felt was being resolved at government level and we hoped that an agreement would have been reached before the start of the summer schedule," said Arumemi-Ikhide in the statement.

The suspension did not affect Arik's flights between London and Nigeria's commercial hub Lagos.
Landing slots at Heathrow, one of the world's busiest airports, are popular and over-subscribed. Nigeria's government and Arik Air want the British government to help it get more slots at Heathrow but UK authorities have said it is not their responsibility under a joint agreement between the countries.

Britain and Nigeria have a bilateral air services agreement (BASA) which allows them each 21 equal flight frequencies between the two countries, which their airlines can use.

The UK argues that Nigeria is entitled to 21 flights to the Britain a week but it can not guarantee them 21 landing slots at Heathrow. Other London airports have slots available.
Arumemi-Ikhide said Nigeria gave UK carrier "unfettered access" to the slots at Nigeria's Abuja and Lagos airports. "However, this is not reciprocated in the UK," he added.

The Nigerian aviation ministry was not immediately available for comment on Saturday. It warned last year that it would not "stand idly by while Nigerian flag carriers are unfairly treated when BASA agreements clearly state otherwise."

Nigerian authorities fined BA and Virgin Atlantic a total of $235 million for alleged price fixing in November, which both airlines deny.
The aviation minister has claimed BA flights between London and Nigeria we more expensive than flights covering a similar distance between Britain and Ghana.

Searches on the BA website show flights to Ghana are significantly cheaper than to Nigeria in business class and first class but not in economy class.Source URL: http://davidlabounty.blogspot.com/2012/03/

Driver robs ACN senator at gun point

Senator Ehigie Uzamere (above), of the Action Congress of Nigeria representing Edo South, was robbed at gun point on Friday afternoon March 16th, by his one of his drivers, a man who had been working for him for the past seven years.

According to the senator, he was on his way to the airport, when the driver, Mohammed Ibrahim, in his mid thirties, from Nigeer State, suddenly parked the car, came to the senator's side, put a gun to his head, dragged him out of his Mercedes Benz S 430, and sped off with a briefcase containing millions of naira and very important documents, including his international passport and that of his wife.

The driver later called another aide of the senator, telling him where to find the Mercedes Benz. When the aides got there with some detectives, they met the car unlocked and the key put in the pigeon hole. The money and briefcase was missing but the international passports of the sentaor and the wife were found in the car. The police are investigating the case.Source URL: http://davidlabounty.blogspot.com/2012/03/

"Nigerian movie producers are all beggars" - Aremu Afolayan

"Nigerian movie producers are not celebrities in Nigeria. We are just traders. We produce movies and give them to marketers who pay us what they like. Forget those of us that drive big cars. Ask them if they bought the cars with money realised from sale of the movies.  It is our fans that feed us. We are all beggars. I own big cars, but I will still tell you that I don’t have money. Fans help us. They call us and tell us they like our movie and ask us to send our bank account number." Actor/producer Aremu Afolayan, was quoted as saying in an interview with Punch today.

Fans dash money to celebs just because they like their work? Enough money to buy 4 big cars? I'll like to know your fans oh, Mr Afolayan...:-)

69yr old man slaughtered and dismembered over land in Anambra

It may take a long while before the lingering crisis between the Umumerenze Umuezebikogu Umuagu clans `nd their Umuduruekwe counterparts in Anambra State could get any headway. This is hinged more on the alleged murder of one of the principal actors in the dispute, a Francis Ohanebo. For 30 years now, the above families have been engaged in a feud over the ownership of a land in the area but the feud got to a head on Friday, February, 10, 2012.

On that fateful day, the late Ohanebo, 69, was resting in his compound around 8:00 pm, when no fewer than 10 men jumped in, wielding various dangerous weapons. Ohanebo, though reportedly waved their threats aside insisting that his lineage owned the disputed portion of land, his attackers however, were not ready to exchange hot words with him. They already had their briefs. While the old man was trying to raise the alarm, the assailants reportedly swooped on him and inflicted series of cuts on his fragile body.
Ohanebo was thus murdered in his compound in the full glare of some of his hapless relatives.

    Graphic content when you continue...

    Ohanebo's mutilated body
His assailants ensured that he drew his last breath before they let him be.
Apparently not done with him they were said to have beheaded him and cut his body into parts. The severed parts were reportedly dumped into a nearby bush. No sooner had these assailants left Ohanedo’s compound than his son, Moses, alerted the police.

The law enforcement agents then launched a manhunt for the killers. Eventually, seven people connected with the gruesome crime were apprehended while others are still at large.
Those accused of Ohanedo’s murder are Aloysius Osadebe, John Nnaekezie (a.k.a. Okadibia), Ogenabia Ohanebo, Chijioke Mbanusi, Cornelius Obinozie, Emeka Onwukeme and Comrade Ikenna. The matter was immediately charged to court at the Ihiala Chief Magistrate Court in Anambra State, and the seven accused are detained.
In his complaint to the police, Moses Ohanebo claimed that the accused persons and their sponsors, still at large, had conspired to murder his father because of a lingering land dispute. He argued that a continued hearing into the land dispute was to come up on February 14, 2012, but the accused persons, suspecting that the case might not end in their favour, decided to murder his father to silence them as the rightful owners and fraudulently claim ownership.
Chief Magistrate Nwaba, ordered the police to transfer the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) on or before March 26, 2012, being the next adjournment date.
A family member of the late Ohanedo who spoke with reporters at the court, but who pled anonymity for fear of reprisal attacks, maintained that the assault and eventual death of their breadwinner, was the handiwork of the opposing clans with which the late Ohanedo had dispute over the said land.
His words, “It is very clear who are behind this gruesome murder of our father and brother. They thought that by so doing, they would have a head way, but the fight over the disputed land is a forgone issue. It does not belong to them but to us,” the middle aged man said.
At the last hearing of the case, the prosecutor urged the court to remand the seven men in prison custody because the offence is not bail able and besides, granting them bail could jeopardize further investigations in the matter.
This position, the lawyers to the accused objected.
Their lawyers, Ikenna Odigbo, Maduka Ewuzie, Francis Effiong and J. N. Obi prayed the court to grant them bail on the ground that the accused persons could be produced at any given time they are required to appear in court. The judge however decided that the accused be remanded in prison custody against the prayers of the accused’ lawyers. They were to be produced in court at the resumed hearing of the case.

Two Brides and a Baby: Our Side of the Story - Silverbird Cinemas

Defamatory allegations of fraud against Silverbird Cinemas by Mrs Blessing Effiom Egbe with respect to the Movie - Two Brides and a Baby - The true position

It has come to our  attention  that a certain Mrs. Blessing Effiom Egbe has been making disparaging allegations of fraud and unethical practices against Silverbird Cinemas with respect to the exhibition of the movie ‘Two Brides and a Baby’ which was produced by her. The said Mrs. Egbe has gone to the extent of issuing a press statement dated 28/02/2012 and titled ‘Notification of scam and impending lawsuit’. She has also engaged in a campaign of calumny against Silverbird Cinemas on different social media geared towards inciting public hatred against Silverbird Cinemas. It has therefore become necessary to set the records straight in the face of what is obviously cheap blackmail by Mrs. Egbe.

It is important to make it clear from the onset that Silverbird Cinemas does not have any direct business relationship with Mrs. Egbe. In its business as exhibitors of movies to the general public, Silverbird Cinemas deals only with approved movie distributors based on agreed contractual terms. This was not different in the case of the movie Two Brides and a Baby.

Silverbird Cinemas acquired the rights to exhibit Two brides and a baby from Okhma Global Limited run by one Ms. Mary Ephraim Ita whom we understand is the distributor for the movie and appointed by Mrs. Egbe. Based on the contract signed between Silverbird Cinemas and Okhma Global, it was agreed that the movie would  be exhibited at Silverbird Cinemas in Abuja, Port Harcourt, Uyo and Lagos. In all the period of the negotiation, Silverbird dealt directly with Okhma Global Limited to the exclusion of all other persons.

It was agreed between Silverbird Cinemas and Okhma Global Limited that the movie was to be exhibited for a minimum of three weeks and for such extended periods thereafter based on the performance of the movie. To this end, Silverbird Cinemas provided Okhma Global Limited with the movie schedules and sales report for each week in advance for the period that the exhibition lasted. When Silverbird Cinemas expressed its desire to extend the screening of the movie as provided for under the agreement with Okhma Global, it forwarded the movie schedule for the week spanning 27th January 2012 – 2nd February 2012  by email to Okhma Global through its contact person, one Ms. Victoria Agbor. The notification of the schedule which represented the apparent intention to exhibit the movie in the week referred to was never objected to, neither did Silverbird Cinemas receive any notice of termination of the Agreement.

It is therefore incorrect as it is being insinuated by Mrs. Egbe in her press release that the movie was shown beyond 13th January 2012 without her requisite knowledge and consent or that of Okhma Global.  Silverbird Cinemas has been in the business of exhibiting both local and international movies for quite a while and its integrity has never been questioned in such a despicable manner. Silverbird Cinemas maintains that it has fulfilled all its contractual obligations with respect to Two Brides and a Baby to Okhma Global which has not raised any issue with it. We would have expected therefore that Mrs. Egbe would have channelled her grievances towards her distributor (Okhma Global) rather than dragging Silverbird Cinemas into her private vendetta.

Silverbird Cinemas is therefore justifiably embarrassed by the contents of the Press Release as well as the various libellous publications instigated by Mrs. Egbe in different social media, blogs and websites including but not limited to her Tweeter account, Linda Ikeji’s blog and Nigeriafilms.com which seem to suggest that Silverbird Cinemas fraudulently made copies of the movie  to  exhibit illegally without the knowledge and consent of Okhma Global or that it has failed to make the necessary royalty payments for the exhibition to Okhma Global which it contracted with.

Silverbird Cinemas views these serious allegations of fraud contained in these publications as unfounded, vexatious, defamatory and a deliberate attempt to smear its hard-won corporate integrity. As a responsible corporate organization , it abides with all the extant Codes of Corporate Governance and goes to great lengths to maintain transparency in all its corporate dealings. Mrs. Egbe’s indiscretion in going public with such unfounded and malicious allegations of a grievous nature as fraud despite explanations made to her to forward any reservations or enquiries she might have with the contract for the exhibition of the movie to Okhma Global has caused Silverbird Cinemas loss of business reputation and goodwill, as it is constantly inundated daily with calls by its business associates seeking to verify the truth of the allegations.

We have also noted the negative comments and conclusions reached by the general public on the websites, blogs and social media based on the stories published on the instigation of Mrs. Egbe.  We have therefore instructed our team of lawyers to undertake a review of the circumstances surrounding this episode and we may be constrained to commence legal action against Mrs. Egbe if she does not make a retraction of the defamatory statements she has made against Silverbird Cinemas along with an apology for her false and unfounded statements. Silverbird as an advocate of the growth and development of the Nigerian entertainment industry will continue to support the industry including Nollywood irrespective of the negative publicity.

We also urge members of the press to balance their reporting of this incident based on verifiable facts in line with the best ethics of journalism. Silverbird Communications Limited and by extension, Silverbird Cinemas has an open door policy towards media relations and is always available to make any clarifications on this issue that may be required. For further enquiries, please contact Ayotunde Sewanu on 08030733433.

    Signed:

    Management.
